Throughout July 2025 and January 2026 I spent time periodically observing and documenting a cadet lyceum in Kaunas, Lithuania, witnessing the education of children and teens set against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions in eastern Europe. Lithuania, a former socialist state, arrives at the present with a violent history of oppression and occupation. This is a central drive within contemporary, national subjectivity; the horizon of the past merging with the horizon of the future. An ongoing process of becoming, materialising through integration, functionalisation, separation and destruction. The nation comes to life through its subjects, it embodies them – an occupied body, a national body, grounded in and dependent on its land.
